Rue Crémieux and bending the rules

rue cremiux deuxTucked behind Bastille in the 12th arrondissement of Paris is the famed-to-locals-but-secret-to-everyone-else rue Crémieux. When I first came upon this street I had one thought:

"How did they get away with it?!"

Paris has a slew of rules on what colours you can paint your doors, windows, buildings, fountains, signs... everything. For example, the green of the bookstalls along the Seine is the same green on street signs, fountains and park benches. It's called "Carriage Green" and to veer to far from this dark hue will get the coppers on you straight away.

No one wants the coppers on them straight away or any other time either.

So the residents comply and just move on to complain about other things.Then there is rue Crémieux, which is pastel and pretty and different. I don't know how they convinced city hall, but I'm so delighted they did.
