The art of following your true enthusiasm
The local bookstore handed me a box of old magazines and said, “Can you do something with these?” Why yes I can. Let’s make note cards! Watch the time-lapse video over at Substack. Scroll down to see a few of the notecards. FUN! Then we will get into the art of following your true enthusiasm.
Sorry the video is not here and you have to do some clicky clacking around to get to it. I’m slowly migrating my energy over to Substack because it’s just so much EASIER to post a bunch of great stuff. Read about my website building angst here.
Over there I showed my weekly visual journals. I’m adding tutorials for the paid tier. I think all my learning stuff will go in the paid tier. Early days but I’m on fire. Join me at Substack for free.
The thing I’m noticing most about Substack is how it shows the enthusiasm for posts on the front page. It’s not all neat and tidy and elegant like a website. It’s a cacophony of enthusiasm. Anyway, join for free. I also wrote an essay about Summer Storms. Lush!
Back to the notecards, which have the most wonderful captions, hairdos and craft ideas:
Caption: Sailors, skiers, and scavengers could warm up to this turtleneck nicely.
How great is that!?!!?! Oh the copywriter in charge of this catalogue must have had a great time. Here’s another one:
Caption: Bike-riding businessman will appreciate a casual tweedy tie.
Yes he will! And he won’t be mocked at all at work for wearing this crafty getup. Another one:
Caption: Bikini of washable yarn has surprise color accents on the top and on the waistline.
The only surprise with this bikini is going to happen after it falls off when it gets wet. Seems a bit loosey goosey.
What I loved about this little project was that I was NEVER going to actually crochet these things.
I saw this beat up old guide and thought NOTECARDS! And that is the lesson here. I think we are all brought into this world with different know-hows. I’m not sure if there is a big university on the other side of the veil where we go to prep for this life, or all our lives, but if it exists, I was in PAPER CRAFTS 101 and not TEXTILE CRAFTS 101.
That’s the art of following your enthusiasm.
There is a little bit of haunting and a little bit of enthusiasm all rolled into one. I couldn’t get the notecards out of my mind when I saw this guide. Other people would look at it and think CROCHET or RECYCLING but I thought NOTECARDS. Why?!
Because that’s who I am.
Speaking of, I am waiting… nigh… salivating… at the door today because my stickers are about to arrive. I’ll be popping them into the August Mail Club letter along with an art print/postcard. It’s all running a bit late no thanks to the sticker people. I’m dealing with a new sticker printer and the delivery schedule was unanticipated.
The strawberry-laden mail club letter from July ended up in a book!!!! Look at this cute little present I received in the mail:
Jennifer Melville is an author and wrote a book that included that nice moment of receiving her Cottage Letter in the mail.
That was a nice surprise! Sometimes I wonder if I’m on the right track. Are these Cottage Letters resonating with people? I admit, the NAME Cottage Letters sounds a bit old lady but I like how the words fit together. Look at the double Ts. Gorge.
